The Foundry is an 8-storey premium grade commercial office building with ground level retail, totalling 85,000m2 GBA - the largest commercial building using a steel frame in Australia, involving 8,500 tonnes of structural steel.
The project brief was to incorporate DfMA as much as possible, i.e. Design for Manufacture and Assembly. This was achieved with the modularisation of the cores, risers, skylight roof pods, switchback stairs, glazed lift shafts, roof humps (feature elements) and atrium edge protection - all of which were installed and finished to AESS4.
The structure comprised 6 steel cores and composite structural steel floor plates, typically over 10,000m2 - making it the largest in Australia for a commercial building. Most of the superstructure was exposed to view and completed to an architectural finish of AESS3.
The 9,000m2 roof was supported with 1,000 tonnes of structural steel, comprising a mix of glazed skylights, metal standing-seam and membrane (TPO) due to its complex geometry.
